Half loving tribute and half detective story, “Packed” centers on Anderson as she travels around the United States trying to piece together what happened to Wilkinson. Packed in a Trunk: The Lost Art of Edith Lake Wilkinson (2015, Wolfe, unrated, $25) A few years ago, screenwriter Jane Anderson (“Olive Kitteridge”) became determined to restore the reputation of her great aunt, a lesbian artist who, in 1924, was committed to an asylum and stripped of all of her possessions. There’s so much going on involving ghosts, childhood traumas and accidental deaths that without Brody’s solid performance, the whole movie would spin out of control. It’s a bit slick and predictable but it’s still a kick to see Portman blast away the bad guys.īacktrack (2015, Lionsgate, R, $20) Need a reminder of how good an actor Adrien Brody is? Check out this psychological thriller about a psychiatrist who, following the demise of his daughter, begins to see dead people. Despite a tortured production history that included director and cast changes, “Jane” is gripping from start to finish, with a structure that slowly teases out Jane’s backstory, involving a love affair with a Civil War soldier (Joel Edgerton). Jane Got a Gun (2015, Anchor Bay, R, $30) Natalie Portman stars in Gavin O’Connor’s revisionist Western as a pioneer woman seeking to defend herself against a vile smoothie (Ewan McGregor) and his band of outlaws. This stylish riff on illusion and identity is smart, surprising and deeply affecting. In an attempt to discover if he is the one who ratted her out to the Nazis, she begins playing a very dangerous game. Set in Berlin in the days following World War II, the action revolves around a Holocaust survivor named Nelly (Hoss) who, post-plastic surgery, goes unrecognized by her husband.

After a lighthearted beginning, the film descends into a series of escapades involving sinister elves and demonic gingerbread men. Neither scary nor particularly funny, “Krampus” revolves around members of a dysfunctional family (Toni Collette, Adam Scott, Emjay Anthony) who invite the ghoul into their home by forgetting the true meaning of Christmas. But this misbegotten horror comedy isn’t it. Nicholas’s evil opposite, a horned and hooved creature named Krampus. To Nemes’ credit, he manages to capture the hell that is Auschwitz while never allowing you to forget the nobility of Saul’s quest.Įxtras: commentary by Nemes, featurettes and deleted scenes. Undeniably powerful, the Foreign Language Oscar-winner grips you in spite of the distracting way Nemes shoots the film with almost nothing but close-ups of Rohrig’s face and the back of his head. Afterwards, Saul has only one goal: find a rabbi to give the child a proper burial. Son of Saul (2015, Sony, R, $30) In Hungarian filmmaker Laszlo Nemes’ harrowing Holocaust movie, a Jewish worker (Géza Röhrig) at Auschwitz watches in horror as a young boy survives the gas chamber only to be killed by an SS guard.
